The Inauguration Weekend

January 19, 2009 Leave a comment Go to comments

After the election, when I read about Obama in the news, it seemed surreal. Over the past few months, it started to pass but with the inauguration on Tuesday, it’s coming back. A part of me still can’t believe he won. During the election cycle, I kept waiting for the proverbial “other shoe” to drop, but it never did. Now, Obama is going to be president and a part of me is still waiting for the shoe drop. After the comedic tragedy of the past eight years, it’s a nice to have a president with some intellectual gravitas. Let’s hope Obama doesn’t blunder his presidency à la Jimmy Carter or to a smaller degree, Bill Clinton. Instead, I hope Obama will prove his detractors wrong and fullfil his supporters’s hopes. [Speaking of detractors, out of the millions who didn’t vote for Obama, I wonder how many found a political reason to vote against him in order to cover for their racism].

I’m not going to expound on the historic nature of Obama’s presidency and such, because it’s written everywhere else [and at this point, we know all about it]. Nevertheless, I can’t imagine how this moment in time must be like for the people who lived through the Civil Rights movement. I have a co-worker whose grandfather experienced segregation firsthand, and I wonder if he ever thought he would live to see a day that a black person – someone who for many, many decades was deemed essentially a sub-species of the human race in this country – becomes America’s leader and the arguably the most powerful person in the world [After the debacle of the previous presidency and the resulting downward spiral of our nation’s standing in the world, I feel that I should qualify the statement that our president is “the most powerful person in the world” with “arguably”].  If you were to travel back to the early 1960s and tell people then that an African-American president would be sworn into office in 2009, I wonder how many people would believe you.
