What The Hell Is Wrong With This Country?

When did it become treasonous or seditious to disagree with the government or display displeasure with your president? When this happened to the Dixie Chicks way back, I passed it off as a short-term case of jingoism, due to the recently launced war. But sadly, it looks as though the country has descended to a period when dissent is automatically equated to anti-Americanism. Sad times indeed.

I am curious to see where this winds up. As has been pointed out to me, freedom of speech does not mean that there will never be ramifications of that speech.

I am not allowed as an employee to either express my political views nor to comments upon those of others. I am aware of this. But these women were also not employees, they were club members.

Unfortunately, I am not sure where international Bridge tournaments fall in the spectrum. It seems as if there’s a civil liberties question in play if the by-laws of the club do not forbid the sort of behavior demonstrated. It certainly seems that a lawyer could make a fairly persuasive argument that there were no restrictions on the women’s right to create or display the sign and that penalizing them for unlisted behaviors, could open the club to a lawsuit.

    Any one else?

I agree that free speech has limits, and if these women broke some sort of Bridge Club By-Laws, that’s fine also. What upsets me is that these women were called “treasonous” and “seditious”. I happen to dislike Bush. Does that automatically mean I’m an Al-Qaeda sympathizer?
